Why us

The senior team organisations call when technology decisions matter.

Altaire has worked through every technology wave since 1999. The firm was founded straight out of running the technology for one of the early AI companies, so AI is not something we picked up when it trended: we first deployed it to 20 million users in 2012, more than a decade before the current wave had a name. That history matters. It means we are not a reaction to the AI market. Every wave brings excitement, confusion, vendors, risk and opportunity, and every wave needs judgement. That is where we work best.

Technology is not the point

It is the catalyst. The point is a customer getting an answer sooner, a colleague making a better decision, an organisation becoming more capable than it was before. We do not sell noise, we do not sell dependency, and we do not pretend every problem is an AI problem. Often the honest answer is that it is not an AI problem at all, just a now problem: something worth solving well today, whatever the technology turns out to be.

How we work

Altaire is senior-led by design. Clients work directly with experienced practitioners who shape and lead the engagement, never handed down to juniors. When a challenge needs deeper specialist expertise (AI, legal, regulatory, clinical, commercial or sector), we assemble the right team around it: our own people alongside an accredited network of trusted partners, so the firm scales to the work without ever thinning the seniority. Altaire remains the accountable partner throughout.

We still build

Altaire grew up building large-scale data and AI platforms, and that has not stopped. We are selective about it now: we build where a problem is big, real and still unsolved, in the gap before the large platforms arrive at it. Then we give the result away, free and open source, because a tool you can take and run without us is the same promise as the rest of our work. Capability, not dependency.

Discretion

We often work where discretion is the point: safety-critical, regulated, high-consequence environments where what we did stays with the client. We do not detail that work here, and that is deliberate. You are not invited into places like these unless you can be trusted to keep them, and that reticence is part of what you are hiring.

How we measure success

Good delivery is visible in behaviour. Customers get answers sooner. Teams make better decisions. Governance becomes clearer. Tools become part of normal work. The strongest sign of adoption is simple: people no longer want the tool taken away.

The people

The senior people who win the work are the people who do it. You’ll know exactly who you’re working with before anything starts.

Steve Ball

Steve Ball

Managing Director. Steve has led Altaire through every technology wave since 1999. His teams have shipped secure enterprise platforms that deliver more than a million transactions a second to over 100 million users, and built the UK’s largest privately owned eCRM consultancy. He was running the technology for one of the early AI companies before Altaire began, and building with AI through the 1990s, long before the industry caught up.

Giancarlo Erra

Giancarlo Erra

Lead AI Consultant. Giancarlo is who you want in the room when minds need changing. A software engineer of over twenty years and a genuine applied-AI expert, he does the rare thing: he takes what he has built in production and explains it to anyone, at any level, until the idea lands. A serial entrepreneur and a recording artist on the acclaimed Kscope label, he has shared the Starmus stage with Nobel laureates and astronauts. That is why his workshops move opinions, not just agendas.

Martin Henwood

Martin Henwood

Head of Compliance. Martin owns compliance and assurance at Altaire. An ISO Lead Auditor, he wrote the bulk of Altaire’s ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 framework: the hundreds of policies, and the discipline behind them. His career runs through large-scale content, publishing and ecommerce delivery, and he is a rare kind of compliance lead, a hands-on builder working at the sharp edge of applied AI. When Altaire says governance is what lets serious innovation ship, Martin is why it can.

Sarah Leonard

Sarah Leonard

Head of Projects & Partners. Sarah runs delivery and manages Altaire’s network of trusted third-party partners: the specialist and accredited capacity we bring in when an engagement needs it. She came to programme delivery from nearly five years in the police, where accountability, composure under pressure and getting the process right are not optional. When Altaire says it innovates and brings in trusted partners to deploy, Sarah is who makes that run.

Nick Drew

Nick Drew

Director, Commercial & Results. Nick owns commercial and results across the whole operation: the person accountable for making sure the work pays, for the client and for Altaire. He brings 35 years at the heart of enterprise technology, IBM, Intel, Oracle and Dell, leading global accounts and alliances with the world’s largest services firms at CXO level. Commercial rigour, global alliances, results.

Simon Rhodes

Simon Rhodes

Leadership & Coaching. Simon coaches and supports leaders through transformational change: reshaping strategy, delivering projects, lifting performance, shifting culture, improving employee experience and accelerating talent. A lawyer who has led two substantial legal firms and created business partnership groups, Simon brings a legal edge to people and process, not legal advice, which sits with our specialist partners. The work runs across business, professional services and sport, and from owner-managed firms to hundreds of C-suite teams in major corporates. Change, people and process, a legal edge.
